Owner

Dr. Paul Wicks

Dr. Wicks was born and raised on a grain and livestock farm in northwest Iowa. Growing up on a farm surrounded by pets and livestock helped fuel Dr. Wicks’s passion for all creatures great and small. Early on, that passion to care for animals solidified into a desire to help all animals (and their people) as a veterinarian. Dr. Wicks knew he would dedicate his life to caring for animals as he pursued his education at Iowa State University where he received his BS in Animal Science in 1984 and his DVM degree in 1988.

Following graduation, Dr. Wicks practiced in a mixed animal practice in Florida. He missed the Midwestern lifestyle and small town living so, after some bouncing around, he sank roots in Aledo Illinois. As the proprietor of a successful veterinary practice, Dr. Wicks gets to do what he loves every day. Dr. Wicks has a special interest in Preventative Medicine and Emergency Preparedness and attends conferences and seminars to improve his knowledge and keep up-to-date on the latest technology. Dr. Wicks is active in the Illinois Veterinary Early Response Team (IVERT) and the Mercer County Medical Reserve Corp.

Dr. Wicks and his wife Mona, who is the Practice Manager for Aledo Veterinary Clinic, enjoy spending time with their dog Hazel. Hazel is an English Shepherd who was initially going to be a working dog; but, she got spoiled and is now a lap dog and part time greeter and an occasional watch dog. Hazel comes to work with Dr. Wicks and Mona most days and, when she is behaving, she is behind the front counter greeting clients and patients. We think Hazel believes that everyone comes in to see her! He is the proud father of Nathan and Collin and is excited to be welcoming his first grandchild to the family during the summer of 2019. During his free time Dr. Wicks enjoys fishing, gardening and camping with the Boy Scouts.

Practice Manager

Mona

Mona graduated from Iowa State University with a BBA in Finance in 1986. She worked for an Insurance Company as a commercial lines underwriter and supervising underwriter until 1995. After moving to Aledo Mona started working with Dr. Wicks to handle the non-medical aspects of veterinary practice in order to free up Dr. Wicks to concentrate on the medical aspects. Mona has helped develop and launch our two online stores, My VetStore Online and My Pharmstore Online. She oversees the business side of the clinic operations including inventory ordering, human resources, finance managament and information technology.

She has two sons, Nathan and Collin, and is married to Dr. Paul Wicks. Her first grandchild is expected in the summer of 2019 and both she and Dr. Wicks are very excited to be joining the grandparent club. The Wicks family also has an English Shepherd named Hazel who you may see while visiting us at the clinic. Mona enjoys crafting, reading and home improvement in her free time.

Certified Veterinary Technician

Ashley

Ashley found her passion in animal medicine at a very young age nursing barn kittens and wildlife back to health. She grew up on the outskirts of Reynolds and Hamlet. Her family home always consisted of family pets including dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits and even a sugar glider (a small marsupial pocket pet similar to the flying squirrel). Ashley’s love for animals grew over the years and by middle school she had decided that she would dedicate her career to the medical care of animals.

Ashley started her formal education by completing the Veterinary Assistant Certification program at Black Hawk College where she learned the importance of vaccines and routine medical care. This sparked her interest in pursuing additional training and education in the veterinary medical field. Ashley completed the Veterinary Technician program at Eastern Iowa Community College where she was able to polish her skills with animal behavior, venipunctures and blood collection, critical care and much more. She interned at an area veterinary practice where she was able to gain skills with large animals and equine and passed her board exams to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. She then accepted a position as a Licensed Veterinary Technician and worked there prior to joining our team. Ashley has a special interest in surgical anesthesia and analgesics where her skills are utilized to make sure any surgical procedures are safe and as painless as possible. She is fascinated with new research and looks for any opportunity to improve the care of her patients.

Ashely continues to be a resident of Mercer County and recently bought a home in Aledo. She uses her education and training to care for her four-legged companions as well. Ashley has three dogs. Meeka is a rescue she fell in love with right out of high school. They have been inseparable ever since. Apollo is a Siberian Husky/Blue Heeler mix she cared for in college. She fell for his charm and dashing good looks and never looked back. Her newest addition is Ruby, a Landseer Newfoundland, who is full of energy and loves EVERYONE…maybe a little too much at times. Ashley also has two cats. Dallas is a Ragdoll that was rescued through her internship. He had damage to his hip joints and required surgery at a young age. She assisted in the surgery and nursed him back to health. He is now a running, jumping, eating, lounging machine. She also has Lux, the petite and feisty female tuxedo kitten she found out on a farm and decided that she was much to lady-like for outdoor life. As the second oldest in the house Lux has secured her position as home supervisor, keeping the dogs in line. Ashley has a special place in her heart for cats and she enjoys sharing her home with them.

Ashley is passionate about her career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician and enjoys seeing other owner’s find the joy in sharing their lives with their fur babies. Ashley enjoys walking or hiking with her dogs and cruising around Aledo with her will behaved pups in the seat.

Veterinary Assistant

Callie

Meet Callie! She is our Veterinary Assistant here at Aledo Veterinary Clinic, she joined our team in 2017. As a lifelong resident of Mercer County, Callie has always enjoyed the rural lifestyle surrounded by agriculture and animals. Growing up Callie had many animals including many different species. Callie has always had a strong bond/relationship with her pets as well as others and couldn’t picture herself working in the workforce without animals!

In 2010 Callie obtained her Veterinary Assistant Certificate through Black Hawk Community College and then continued her education further by completing the Veterinary Technology Program from Muscatine Community College earning her a degree in Associates of Applied Science – Veterinary Technology.

Callies’ main duties include assisting Dr. Wicks and Ashley, our Certified Veterinary Technician. She also focuses a large portion of her day on our large animal (Bovine, Equine, Ovine, etc.) patients and appointments.

Callie is recently and happily married to her husband David. Together they provide a loving home to their dogs – Boost, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, who is very smart, athletic and has completed obedience and agility courses. Being their first ‘child’, Boost is very spoiled and rules the house. Then there’s Gauge, a rescue who is an Australian Shepherd/Labrador mix. He is a total ‘love bug’ and when it comes to personal space there is none, but he is always there to comfort you. Although he is the newest member, he was the missing piece and now completes their perfect family! When Callie is not at work, she enjoys kayaking and hiking with her little family as well as putting together art and craft projects.
